Books of the Month: February

I read a grand total of four books this month, one YA and three lazy adult chick lit novels (which is my go to genre for when I am feeling blah about books. Feel good, rainy day, comfort reads :))

Night Beach by Kirsty Eagar Thanks to Netgalley.
Most anticipated. Gorgeously written (as you would expect). Also, atmospheric and unnerving. Full review to come.

I've Got Your Number by Sophie Kinsella
(gulp) my least fave Kinsella so far :/ Slightly less charming Kinsella goodness, I still liked it, though.

Who's Afraid of Mr Wolfe? by Hazel Ozmond
Fun, swoony times. This hit the spot. Recommended for fans of UK chick lit/romantic suspense? I am clueless on genre casting. Thanks to Chachic for this rec. Full review to come.

Somebody to Love by Kristan Higgins Thanks to Netgalley
I wasn't sure how far I would keep going with Higgins (she can be hit and miss for me). This one was definitely a hit and I am back to anticipating her next book :) Review to come.

Audio Books

I finally finished The Distant Hours by Kate Morton. My gosh, that is one long gothic tale. Gorgeously (over)written, haha. The ending was as haunting as you would want a gothic tale to be. Truly tragic. I am torn about saying I loved this one - because I did love it, but I had to endure through some lengthy passages to get to the point, if you know what I mean.

Unbearable Lightness by Portia DeRossi
Talk about intense. This is read by the author, beautifully so. It's harrowing and desperate and fascinating and honest. I am so glad I got around to making time for this. Not recommended for those who are suffering or recovering from an eating disorder. So open and honest, it may trigger. Otherwise, definitely recommended :)

For those who are pondering my lame reading efforts (haha) I am currently reading a small army of books (j/ks. Kind of). Not sure why I started this infuriating habit of starting a book and then setting it aside for another, ad infintum until I have a small pile on my bedside table with book marks poking out, waiting for me to get back to them. I am hoping to knock a few over and get some reviews out soon :)

Other things of February.

I don't normally watch much TV (at all, really) but I bought my husband season one of Battlestar Gallactica for our anniversary in January and somehow we managed to watch the entire 4 seasons in the space of a month O.o Thanks to the ultimate fangirl for the rec. Feeling a bit dazed after coming up for air. Have to find a new addiction now ;)

For those who were wondering how I went with my attempt at getting into urban fantasy with the Kate Daniels series. Fail. It's just not my thing :)

(Should I feel sheepish about my low count? I didn't want to skip out on my new meme just as I started, but it feels a little like I don't have much to share with you guys :))

  1. THERE IS A KIRSTY EAGAR BOOK ON NETGALLEY!?!??!?!? WHAAAAAT.

lovely wrap-up! And aren't TV obsessions simply the best? I've had an ABSURDLY low read count for 2012, so don't feel bad :) Also, you could blog about anything and I'd read it, I miss your blog posts :D

  2. I do love me some Kristan Higgins (I've only read 2 books of hers), and I'm so glad to know that you loved this one! Also, re: Battlestar, that is my hubs favorite show of all time. I've only watched the miniseries, and I've promised him I will watch the entire series at some point. He keep shoving TV in my face and I'm like AHHH TV OVERLOAD.

  6. I'm so excited to read what you thought of Night Beach! I almost cried when I saw it was Aussies only on NetGalley. I agree, you shouldn't feel guilty about your read count--better to focus on quality and enjoying yourself than on quantity! Also I lawled about BSG. Have you seen the season 2 trailer of Portlandia? It might hit close to home:

  8. Aw too bad about Kinsella? I want to read this too, but I haven't gotten around to it.

I also really liked Somebody to Love! I especially liked the fact that Parker was a writer. I'll have a review of that up soon, too. :)

  9. Can't wait to read your review of Night Beach! I wanted it so bad from Netgalley!

Also, I've had The Distant Hours since it released way back when and still haven't read it. I need to stop buying books and read the books I already have!

  10. YOU SPELLED GALACTICA WRONG!!! Geez, if you were on the show, you'd be someone lame...like Gaeta.

  11. Don't stop blogging!!! I think you'll get back into it eventually, and I love hearing about what you read even if it's not really a book (haha, I mean Battlestar). I was so sad to see Night Beach was only for Aussies. SO unfair. Okay, I saw you did a post of Tomorrow too, so I'll have to go check that out.

    xoxo

  12. I hope you keep blogging (I love your blog too!) - I have found so many fabulous books because of you - I just inhaled Graffiti Moon, SO good! and I am currently devouring The Last Anniversary by Liane Moriarty - which I am loving too.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the Night Beach.

Glad you're loving Battlestar - we could not stop watching when we bought that boxset. Brilliant series.

  13. Nomes! So glad you read Who's Afraid of Mr. Wolfe based on my rec and that you really enjoyed it. Like you, I enjoy reading contemporary romances when I'm feelings slumpish. Also, don't worry about your low count! I've only read a handful of books this year, I'm a lot slower this year compared to last year but I like taking it easy. I don't want to get too tired of reading and blogging. :P

  15. *claps* loveeee Battlestar! I actually just watched it earlier this year as well. The last season was a bit off in parts, I thought, but overall the series is awesome!
