Today the short lists were announced (I am a literary awards junkie :)
Let's talk about the YA ones, yeah?
The Ethel Turner Prize ($30,000), named in honour of the acclaimed author of the children's classic Seven Little Australians, is offered for a work of fiction, non-fiction or poetry written for young people of secondary school level.
Previous winners of the Ethel Turner Prize include Mem Fox and Julie Vivas, Markus Zusak, Ursula Dubosarsky and James Roy (from site)
2011 shortlisted writers are...
- Michelle Cooper - The FitzOsbornes in Exile: The Montmaray Journals - 2
- Cath Crowley - Graffiti Moon
- Kirsty Eagar - Saltwater Vampires
- Belinda Jeffrey - Big River, Little Fish
- Melina Marchetta - The Piper's Son
- Jaclyn Moriarty - Dreaming of Amelia (Ghosts of Ashbury High ~ in the US)
ARGH!! I am SO THRILLED with this list! All SIX of them are female Aussie YA writers and FOUR of them are on my all time fave BELOVED authors list.
I've read FIVE of these and recently acquired A Brief History of Montmaray by Michelle Cooper ~ which is the first book in the series (#2 has been nominated)
This time I REALLY can't call my fave to win. Anyone who has hung out here for a while knows how much I ADORE Jaclyn Moriarty, Kirsty Eagar, Cath Crowley and Melina Marchetta. I was also BLOWN AWAY by Belinda Jeffrey's debut.
Good Luck to all six authors ~ I am feeling incredibly PROUD, hey :D
(Especially of Jaclyn Moriarty. I have SUCH a soft spot for her, haha)
Have you read any of these?
Planning to read any?
What's your pick?
OOOooo Yay! I've read three of them (Graffiti Moon, The Piper's Son and Dreaming of Amelia) and my pick is totally Graffiti Moon, because it is my favourite but books that I want to win almost never do :(
ReplyDeleteFINGERS CROSSED!
Oh man! I need to get my hands on the authors here I don't know! Especially if you can't pick a favorite! They all must be amazing!
ReplyDeleteI was blown away by Kirsty Eagar's other book, Raw Blue, and jaclyn Moriarty has probably written the funniest book I've read this year... but of course, you can probably predict, I'm pulling for Melina. I love her books SO HARD. Will you post an update when winners are announced? Because i know i'll probably forget but I'd still love to know the winners!
ReplyDeleteI've read The Piper's Son and Dreaming of Amelia. Really want to read Graffiti Moon. The other ones sound great too.
ReplyDeleteMelina Marchetta and Jaclyn Moriarty are my two most favourite authors. So proud. :)
I would love to see Jaclyn win (I also have a soft spot for her) but I don't mind who wins. Such a great list of authors.
Almost all the shortlisted writers are on my wishlist. I need to get my hands on The Piper's Son.
ReplyDeleteI have read none of these and want to read them ALL!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to embarrass myself by admitting this, but I haven't read any of these books *hides face in shame*. I need to read Marchetta though, her books have been on my list for a while and I need to get with the program and read!
ReplyDeleteBless you for being an literary award junkie and sharing the news with us.
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy about TPS! I freaking LOVE that book!
Now I plan on working my way down this list for the Aussie RC. So exciting.
It's so awesome that all these amazing women are being recognized.
ReplyDeleteI didn't realise that Belinda Jeffrey had a newish book out. I read Brown Skin Blue recently and thought it was excellent.
ReplyDeleteGreat list of finalist. Some of my favourite books on there and some that I still desperately need to read .
ReplyDeleteI am not sure who I want too win either :)
