Queensland Premier's Literary Awards

Australia's most exceptional literary talents, well known and aspiring, are recognised in the Queensland Premier's Literary Awards.

The short-list this year has five titles:

  • Phillip Gwyne -- Swerve (Penguin)
  • Justine Larbalestier -- Liar (Allen & Unwin)
  • Scott Westerfeld -- Leviathan (Simon Pulse)
  • Melina Marchetta -- The Piper's Son (Penguin)
  • Richard Yaxley -- Drink the Air (self-published)

I've read the top 4, but the 5th, by Richard Yaxley, is self-published (!)
So well done getting short-listed on a self-pub.

Husband and wife Justine and Scott are up against each other :)

I loved Swerve, great Aussie male POV.

But, my pick for this would be Marchetta's The Piper's Son, which is (obviously) being nominated in the YA section, but it's not really a traditional YA title at all. YA Highway featured an outstanding review of The Piper's Son.

Winners announced Tuesday 31st of August.

Here's a link to previous winners in the YA category who include authors Markus Zusac, Judith Clarke, Joanne Horniman, David Metzenthen, Martine Murray & Ursula Dubosarsky.

Also, *drumroll*, tomorrow we will finally find out who takes out this years title of Young Adult Book of The Year from CBCA. The notables list had 22 titles - the following six made it onto the short-list:

  • Stolen by Lucy Christopher
  • A Small Free Kiss in the Dark by Glenda Millard
  • Loving Richard Feynman by Penny Tangey
  • Liar by Justine Larbalestier
  • Jarvis 24 by David Metzenthen
  • The Winds of Heaven by Judith Clarke

Can't wait to find out who the 2010 winner is :)

And, for those who are interested, the 2009 category winners

  1. i feel so out of the loop because I haven't read any of those books. Who's lame, this girl. Sigh.

  2. Hmm...ok, I liked the girly look, but if it doesn't fit your personality, then it makes sense to change it. I love the collage of books on the top, but your title is a little hard to read. I think it's because it's mixed in there with all the other titles so it's easy to confuse it with a book. Color scheme is great though.:)

Oh, and I haven't read any of those books either. *sigh* Quit putting books on my TBR list, Nomes. I've got enough already!! JK. :)

  5. So funny that a husband and wife are up for the same award. That's pretty cool.

Re: The new look. I also LOVED what you had before just because I thought the images were so artsy and beautiful, but some how I feel like this fits you more.

I like the layout better, but I agree that your Inkcrush title gets lost in the picture. Maybe if you changed the font and color it would stand out more and not blend in so much? Otherwise, I love what you have. I only wish I could figure out how to do all this stuff. Going to go cry and play around with my boring looking blog some more. haha

  6. The Piper's Son has been on my reading list for a while...must start on it. Ahem :)

I loved the pictures from your last layout, but I like this layout even more. It feels more edgy, yanno?

  8. Loving the new layout here too! Very pretty.

Lol, Melanie's right, Justine Larbaleister and Scott Westerfeld are both competing for the same award - it must be cool to be an author couple. And they're both represented by different publishers...hmm...

I've heard good things about "Loving Richard Feynman", and am intending to read it soon.

    Great post and happy reading!

  9. Haven't read any of those books, but will add them all to my list. As for the layout-- the other one was very girly, and I assumed you were (because I only know you through the blog-world). This definitely is more funky and less girly.

  10. hahah...you changed it again :-) I like this combo of the two. However, I still loved that pic of the girl with the beautiful white dress sitting on the bed (or was it a couch) with the black boots. I don't know why I loved that image so much. Where did you get that from? In any event, I really like what you have more now because it feels more fun, yet feminine with a bit of whimsy. And your title stands out more. Nicely done.

went back to the girly scene, haha. just looks tidier and i'm hoping the grey and blue make it more arty/less girly.
