Eleven Contemp YA's I Insanely Must Acquire

My top eleven upcoming books (contemporary YA) that I am ridiculously hanging out for. None are available yet. Links go to goodreads for synopsis and release dates are all according to goodreads and either US or UK dates. I'm sure I'll be waiting even longer down here in Aus :)

There's other books I'm interested in but all these are must-reads for me.

Also, none of these are Aussie - I'll do an Aussie list later :)

Between here and Forever by Elizabeth Scott
May 24 2011

It's Elizabeth Scott (!) so I would read it no matter what - but the synopsis has me even more antsy for it and I love the quietness and hope in the cover.

10 Miles Past Normal by Frances O'Roark Dowell
March 11 2010

As soon as I read the blurb I was hooked. Beyond hooked. I haven't even read it yet and I kinda wish I had written it. The cover! Mate, the cover! I want to be in it. Totally my kind of book. (Also, read and loved her book Dovey Coe about eight years ago - it won the Edgar Allan Poe Award)

The History of Luck by Jandy Nelson

No cover for this one. But anyone who's read The Sky Is Everywhere will know why it's on my list. Can't wait to slip into more of her prose.

Jan 1, 2011

Where She Went by Gayle Forman
April 19 2011

The sequel to If I Stay sounds brilliant. Set three years in the future and from Adam's POV - an older protag (20? 21?). I have a feeling I will love this book.
You Against Me by Jenny Downham
Dec 2 2010

It's been a few years since Before I Die and I know this will be a stunning sophomore novel well worth the wait. Plus I love UK YA - of which I have not read much. Hmm, any recs for more UK Contemp? :)
Amelia O'Donohue is So Not a Virgin by Helen Fitzgerald
Nov 1 2010

I love Helen's adult fiction and am psyched she's written a book for the YA scene. I'm hoping it has some of her signature black humour and wild shenanigans in it.
Like Mandarin by Kirsten Hubbard
March 8 2011

I've heard this is Marchetta-esque and poignant and original. It looks stunning and literary and I know it's a book I could fall in love with.
The Mockingbirds by Daisy Whitney
Nov 2 2010

Mainly pumped for this b/c of some earlier hype. I've been burned by hype before but I think this one will live up to it or even supersede it. I'm ready to be blown away.

What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen
May 10 2011

Sarah Dessen is just a staple, hey. I do like flopping down and sinking into it. I was a little disappointed with Along for the Ride (her most recent book) but I love the sound of this and she always conjours up swoon-worthy love interests.
Fixing Delilah by Sarah Ockler
Dec 1 2010

After Twenty Boy Summer I know I want to read anything Sarah Ockler writes. A new favourite author.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins
Dec 2 2010

One of my biggest waiting for books. I don't even know what to say but I TRULY CAN'T WAIT!

Are you planning to read any of these?
Is there an upcoming contemp YA you're pumped about that I haven't listed?
(I am always always up for recommendations)

And... completely unrelated but

I stumbled across the German cover for Laurie Halse Anderson's Wintergirls
and how stunning is it?
I think it's my favourite out of all the diff versions
(my cover comparison post for Wintergirls)
Watch the German trailer for Wintergirls - Ooooh, quite ominous and beautiful

  1. Ohhh, I'm really excited for The Mockingbirds and What Happened to Goodbye!

I also can't wait for Dash and Lily's Book of Dares by Rachel Cohn and David Levithan, which is released in December :)

  2. Ohh, yeah, Dash and Lily's Book of Dares also sounds brilliant! Is it out in Aus then? Or will you order it in?

  3. I think it's out in the US this month. This is so silly, but I'm loving the Australian cover, so I think I'll be patient and wait til it comes here in Decemer haha

  4. Oh - yeah -our cover is fantastically better. I'd hang out for that too :)

  5. OOoohh! All of them look amazing! Can't wait! I am especially interested in The Mockingbirds

  6. Amazing post! I'm waiting on all of those too! I'll be waiting for your Aussie list. ;)

    To add on...

    - Then I Met My Sister by Christine Hurley Deriso (the cover is pretty cool, and I'm a sucker for contemp)
    - Rival by Sara Bennett Wealer (so excited about this one--pre-ordered it a few days ago)
    - Exposed by Kimberly Marcus (it's being compared to Ellen Hopcus' stuff//another verse novel!)
    - Fall For Anything by Courtney Summers
    - The Lying Game by Sara Shepard (love the Pretty Little Liars series! I've got the Netgalley ebook)
    - Please Ignore Vera Dietz by A.S. King (which just released and has been receiving RAVE REVIEWS)

  7. Oh yeah! Dash & Lily! I really like the Aussie cover for it. Very unique. ;)

  8. Misha - Ithink The MOckingbirds is going to be awesome

and @ Cass - awesome awesome list! I have also seen rave reviews for A S King's new book. And I forgot about Fall For Anything (I've already pre-ordered it too :)

I love verse novels so thanks for the rec and now I'm off to check out your others on the list. so pumped for new books to wait for :)

  9. I like the sound of Between Here and Forever. Can't wait for your Aussie list!

  10. The Mockingbirds is SO good I haven't cried so much at book since The Book Thief.

I'm excited about all these books but especially Between Here and Forever and What Happened to Goodbye

Other books I can't wait for are C-Side Tales by Tara Kelly, When Darkness Shows the Stars by Diana Peterfreund and Forever by Maggie Stiefvater and The Near Witch by Victoria Schwab

  11. Alright so I definitely did not know about Jandy Nelson's new book. AWESOME! Really I can't wait to read all of these. Thanks for sharing, I'll have to make sure they are all on my wishlist.

  12. I basically want to read all of these. I'm so glad you share my love for contemporary! The last non-contemporary I could even get into was the Hunger Games trilogy. Other than that, paranormal/fantasy just doesn't do it for me anymore.

  13. I am anxious for quite a few of these too. I have been trying to read more contemporary YA of late as I am getting tired of the paranormal.

I also love the German cover of Wintergirls. the way they have the girl almost totally blurred out of the picture is perfect against the stalk blue of the butterfly.

  14. Thanks for following at Book Dreaming! Good luck with the contest - maybe you'll win one of those ARCs. :-)

  15. I can't wait to read What Happened to Goodbye, Where She Went, Like Mandarin, and The History of Luck!

Fall for Anything by Courtney Summers is my most anticipated book, though.

  16. I'm looking forward to so many of these, especially Anna & the French Kiss. And I should probably read IF I STAY before WHERE SHE WENT comes out. :)

  17. So yeah, basically all of these books are on my list. I WANT THEM ALL. Especially the ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS.

  18. I want them ALL, so, so much.

Especially, You Against Me cos I LOVE Jenny Downham. Also, The History of Luck, Where She Went, Like Mandarin and Amelia O'Donohue is So Not A Virgin.

Add to that Amy Reed's Clean and Courtney Summers' Fall For Anything.

  19. what happened to goodbye! can't wait, i said so on my non-book blog the other day.
when i heard a few months ago that there was going to be a sequel to If I Stay it made my day.
i'm looking forward to vanilla skye by cathy cassidy, even if her books a too easy for me and across the universe.

  20. I think I've fallen in love with that Elizabeth Scott cover - and of course the Wintergirls one. You know I've been reading a lot of YA contemp lately, thanks to you know who *poke* but I haven't actually gone out to search for ones that are coming out. Guess I'll just keep coming here and looking for recs. :)

  21. These books look amazing. Some I already new about but others I just discovered here. I love Before I Die by Jenny Downham and can't wait to read her next one. Thanks for posting the publishing dates too, so I know how long I'll have to wait.

  22. I'm looking forward to Sarah Okler's book. I enjoyed her first one so much. Great post. I enjoy finding out about about upcoming books.

Thanks for taking out the time to compile the information.
(& thanks for stopping by my blog so often!)

    Mad Scientist

  23. Oh my gosh these are amazing!!! I'm planning on opening my goodreads right now and adding them all! FANTASTIC!

  24. Great list there! I'm looking forward to Between Here and Forever & Fixing Delilah as well. Also that German cover is really pretty, love that shade of blue!

  25. One I have on pre-order is Hannah Moskowitz's Invincible Summer, which is out in April. Full disclosure: I beta-read this last year it via Absolute Write, but I think it may well have changed a bit since then. Hannah is hugely talented (and still only 19).

I don't know if it should count, as it is out now in the UK, but I do very much want to read Jenny Valentine's new one, The Double Life of Cassiel Roadnight.

  26. I haven't read a ton of UK contemporary recently, but I'm about to read You Against Me. It sounds *so* good. Actually I want pretty much all of the titles you've listed there. Like Mandarin is probably the one I want the most.

In terms of titles you haven't mentioned, I'm incredibly intrigued by the sound of Lauren Strasnick's Her and Me and You. Also, for 2011 UK-contemporary-awesomeness, Cat Clarke's Entangled is pretty damn amazing.

  27. @ Lauren: Ohhh - so cool you're about to read You Against Me!

And i checked out Entangled - I'd seen it around but thought it was paranormal for some reason? I just pre-ordered it :)

Oh - and I forgot about Her and Me and You - I think it's already out? One of my fave covers this year.

    Thanks for the suggestions

And everyone - thanks for the recs and awesome comments :)

  28. These YA covers are just getting better and better - sooo gorgeous! Especially the German cover you highlighted.

  29. ha ha, pretty much all of those are on my wish list!

  30. great experience, dude! thanks for this great post wow... it's very wonderful report.

  31. I like the German cover,too.

You can get an e-galley of Between Here and Forever when particiating in the Simon & Schuster galley grab porgramme. Have you got an e-reader?

Thanks for the commenty love :)
